What Should I Do If My Porcelain Veneer Falls Off?

Your porcelain veneers are designed to create a beautiful, long-lasting smile. But despite their durability, sometimes they can fall off or come loose, leaving your underlying tooth exposed. If you’ve lost a veneer, don’t panic. Here’s what you should do (and not do) if yours comes off.

My Veneer Fell Off: Now What?

If you have lost a porcelain veneer, the first thing you should do is collect any pieces that have come off. Be careful not to injure yourself if there are sharp edges, and if your veneer is still intact, keep it clean and don’t break it, as it may still be possible for your dentist to reattach it.

Next, schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. Replacing your veneer may not seem like an urgent matter, but because enamel was removed to apply it, you are exposing your tooth to plaque, debris, and an increased risk of sensitivity.

If you are experiencing sensitivity before your appointment, you can protect your tooth by covering it in dental wax. Do not try to reattach your veneer yourself, as this can damage both your tooth and your veneer.

Can My Veneer Be Replaced?

Whether or not your veneer can be replaced depends on its condition and why it fell off in the first place. If it is because it was improperly attached it is possible to reattach it, however if it is due to poor oral hygiene or damage to the veneer itself, you may need to have it replaced as well as have your tooth filled or have any other oral health problems addressed first.

How Can I Prevent My Veneers from Falling Off?

Here are the best ways to protect and care for them:

  • Brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Do not use abrasive toothpaste or toothpaste that contains peroxide.
  • Brush teeth twice a day and floss once a day.
  • Visit your dentist twice a year for your semi-annual exams and cleanings.
  • Do not use teeth with veneers to chew excessively crunchy or tough foods like hard pretzels, chips, or crusty breads, and never use your teeth to open packages, bite your nails, or chew anything other than food.

Remember, with proper care your porcelain veneers can last up to 20 years, but should an accident happen, your dentist will be happy to help you repair the tooth and help you get your gorgeous smile back as soon as possible.
