Use Your Dental Insurance in the New Year!

We hope that everyone’s new year is kicking off to a great start so far! Now that we’re a couple weeks into the year, many of you have probably already begun your plans to fulfil your personalized resolution.

If you’re like a majority of Americans, you probably intend on either keeping more money in your pocket or shaving off a few pounds. Based on the survey from Statista, 53 percent of Americans surveyed plan to save money as part of their new year resolution, while 45 percent plan to lose weight or get in shape.

Many patients at Center One Dental may not consider this at first, but routine oral care, dental checkups and cleanings do more than simply help you save money. They can also contribute to your overall health by lowering your risk of certain systemic diseases. Furthermore, if your plan is to save money and you have dental insurance, there’s no better time than now to get scheduled, start making use of them and cut costs on expensive restorative and emergency dental treatments!

Running errands throughout the day can be an incredibly rewarding feeling. By the time you get home, you’re left feeling accomplished and proud that you stayed productive and made a difference directly in life. After you confirm that your oral health is in check, your mouth is cleaned, and you get the seal of approval from a dentist on your at-home care, you gain a true peace of mind that you’d rarely get from other errands.

Plus, dentists are making it easier for patients to receive comfortable care more than ever before. We’ll help you confirm how much your insurance will cover these treatments and the types you may want to consider.

The Systemic Health Benefits of Good Oral Health

If part of your resolution is losing weight or simply getting in shape, it may seem strange at first to improve your oral care routine. The fact is if you plan on exercising or losing weight, you’re going to want a healthy heart that makes this exercise possible. If you plan on modifying your diet, you don’t want your teeth and gums to feel tender or cause pain as you start to eat new foods.

Multiple studies have shown oral health to be linked to other more serious systemic diseases, including heart disease, stroke and even cancer. Much of this is due to chronic inflammation throughout the body, and gum inflammation is no exception.

Don't Leave Your Benefits On the Table

But what does this all have to do with dental insurance? A full oral care regimen includes visiting the dentist twice a year for cleanings and checkups. The overwhelming majority of dental insurance plans cover anywhere from 80 to 100 percent of these treatments. By completing just these appointments alone, you’re reducing your risk of oral care problems, and therefore reducing your risk of conditions linked to issues that affect your overall health.

Additionally, dental benefits don’t carry over into the new year. It’s better to get your routine appointments out of the way now and commit to a strong oral care regimen, than wait for a dental issue that could threaten your oral and overall health to appear. Restorative and emergency treatments are generally far more expensive as well, which means using your benefits and avoiding the need for these treatments is significantly more cost-efficient than not regularly attending.

We hope that as you begin your resolutions, you consider the way oral health can be tied to successfully completing them. Until then, Dr. Raj and the team at Center One Dental wishes you a healthy and happy new year!
